Apple's App Store has always felt like the most rounded experience, even with the admittedly solid Google Play Store as a rival. It is a similar story with iTunes, and it seems that both services have enjoyed spectacular growth in recent months and have proved again why Apple's iOS can monetize apps and entertainment like no other mobile platform.
At the company's last earnings call, Cupertino recorded some spectacular results, including $7.7 billion in profit. iPhone sales grew, while Mac sales also rose; it was almost the perfect result if not for the falling sales of the iPad. Nevertheless, amid what CEO Tim Cook said was "the best execution of any quarter since I’ve been at Apple," details about just how successful iTunes had been over said quarter got lost.
For some perspective, we are in a world of streaming, where people can pay small monthly sums and get any song they want through the likes of Pandora, and any movie or TV show through Netflix. In this streaming world, iTunes was supposed to be a casualty, but the service is actually thriving. It was Apple's fastest growing business through the last quarter and made $4.5 billion in revenue as business grew by 12% year on year.
It is a similar story for the App Store, and today Apple has revealed that its applications portal had a massive July. During the month, the service had a record number of downloads, meaning it was the most successful month in the history of the now very mature store. The App Store made record revenue while a record amount of transaction were completed. Apple confirmed recently that a massive 75 billion apps have now been downloaded, while the company has paid out $20 billion to developers over the lifetime of the store.
