Apple Watch due spring 2015The Apple Watch made its debut in September but the company confirmed that the wearable would not be landing until 2015. There were reasons why Apple launched a product that would take months to arrive, but at least now there seems to be some official confirmation as to when the smartwatch will arrive. Apple Senior Vice President of Retail and Online Stores Angela Ahrendts said in a video message to employees that the Apple Watch will make its debut in the spring of 2015.

The reasons why Apple launched an unfinished product early are numerous. Firstly the company has committed itself to a launch window for all products during the fall and wanted to stick with that. Secondly the smartwatch market is growing and Android Wear’s presence meant Cupertino needed to confirm its presence. Millions will probably hold off buying an Android Wear smartwatch as they wait for Apple’s product. There is also the more simple fact that the device was not completely finished.

However, the Apple Watch as worn by Tim Cook and other Cupertino execs certainly looked more finished than needing a further six months. My source say that while Ahrendts is speaking the truth, she is not revealing the full story. Because the Apple Watch comes in several guises the company will stagger the launch window. The first to arrive will be the sport oriented version of the device, with the more fashion conscience variant with premium build set to land in the spring.

Tim Cook has recently described the Apple Watch as “profound”.
